Just for You

Follow us as we start our cruise to the Amazon River. We leave San Diego on September 30, 2008 aboard the ms Veendam for a 32 day cruise which will take us through the Panama Canal and as far as Manaus, Brazil - which is about 1,000 miles up the Amazon River.

There are 15 ports of call, plus Tampa, FL, where we disembark on November 1st for our flight home. At some of the ports we plan side excursions, which we will describe as we go along.

En Route to Costa Rico

Since last evening we have been running parallel to the Central America coastline. Soon after leaving Puerta Chiapas, we past by Guatemala,San Salvador and Honduras. The ship runs about 88 miles off the coast, so no land is visible. The seas were moderate all night which induced sleep. This morning we were at 89 degrees 76.l'W, which is about the longitude of Grand Rapids. Sunrise was at 7:00 AM and sunset will be at 6:55 PM. The temperature is about 76 degrees, The skies are overcast. We have passed through an occasional squall, but nothing too dramatic.

After a normal breakfast we went for a walk around the Lower Promenade deck. Each circuit is 1/4 mile. Ruth completed 3 circuits. While she rested in a deck chair I did another lap. I would of done more, but it takes sooo muuuch time!!!

This afternoon there are two lectures on Costa Rico. The first one covers birds. Since there are over 850 species, you can see the lecturer has her work cut out for her. The second lecture is on volcanoes. This should go better, since there only four active ones. In addition to birds and volcanoes, there are also 1200 varieties of orchids. Since orchids outnumber volcanoes and birds, they have declared orchids their national symbol. Commercially they produce both coffee and bananas.

Originally we were scheduled to dock tomorrow morning at Puetro Caldera, but for some reason the port has been change to Puterenes, which I believe is in the same general area.

The pro-active measures the ship staff has taken, seems to have stabilized the outbread of the flu. It never was an epidemic - there were only about 30 or so cases. There were no new cases overnight. If there continues to be no new cases they will lift the Code Red procedures in the next 2 or 3 days. We thank the Lord we have not caught anything.

You can send emails to us directly from the blog. I believe the direct access to the blog is at amazonjournal.blogspot.com. We love to hear from you.
